By and large, you are correct. I like to call it, "better the devil you know."
However, it really depends on your perception of their character makeup
as to whether or not they really want to hear the truth, and it is there that
you must exercise caution in your delivery.
Telling the truth has hard, and fast rules; something I call, the "Safety, Security, Truth" protocols
and I always check myself by these before speaking MY truth.
Q1 - Is it safe for children, family, friends, and self? ...in that order. If so, Ok.
Q2 - Is it a secure truth? What will be the consequences if you speak "your" truth?
If you answer Yes to BOTH questions and it is a necessary truth, one that you
speak not to just absolve yourself of some guilt... then tell your truth and
let the chips fall where they may.
The truth can be a bitter pill, as someone has previously commented, and it
takes a mature perspective to absorb a painful truth.
More can be said about the "my truth, your truth, and THE truth" perspectives.
Exercise caution.
